Sony HDR-XR550V

HDR-XR550V

Preserve the moment in stunning HD clarity. Featuring a massive 240GB internal hard disk drive, the HDR-XR550V also records 1920 x 1080 high-definition video and 12-megapixel still images. Experience superior low-light shooting performance via the "Exmor R" CMOS sensor, while Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization with Active Mode and 3-way Shake Canceling, which enables you to capture remarkably smooth video from wide angle to full telephoto shooting.

Sony's HDR-XR550V 240GB Handycam Camcorder provides up to 100 hours of high def recording to an internal hard disk drive (HDD), GPS capabilities, and a myriad of other features and functions. In addition to the large HDD, Sony also gave the XR550V the ability to record to proprietary Memory Stick media, or to SD/SDHC memory cards. Transfer video and still images from the HDD to removable media for easy uploading, and to free up space on the camera when you can't get to a PC.

The HDR-XR550V represents the more significant upgrade, with many features that last year's XR500V lacked. Experienced videophiles will particularly appreciate the addition of an electronic viewfinder and manual shutter speed control (adjustable via the excellent cam control dial)—both new this year. The XR550V will also gain all the features that were available only on the flash memory CX500V last year.

All of the camcorder's door covers are solidly attached. The camcorder has a sliding door on top for the accessory shoe; another slider near the lens on the right side covering the mic and headphone jacks; two separate covers underneath the record button for the proprietary AV out and DC power in; and one inside the LCD hiding the Mini-HDMI and USB connectors.

The HDR-CX550V Handycam represents the more compact and more affordable of Sony's new flagship camcorders. It has the same basic processing and components of last year's CX500V, but with several significant upgrades. Like the HDR-XR550V, the HDR-CX550V will include an electronic viewfinder as well as providing manual shutter speed control. It will also offer a non-native 60p output option and in-camera standard definition downconversion. The latter is an especially welcome addition, giving users the ability to record and archive their footage in the highest quality, then export and edit with the smaller, more manageable MPEG-2 files.

Perhaps the most exciting new arrival for HDRXR550V camcorders is the new memory card slot: a single slot that will be compatible with both Memory Stick PRO Duo cards and traditional SD/SDHC cards. This new slot will be featured on Sony's entire Handycam lineup this year, giving users unprecedented flexibility in sticking with Sony's proprietary memory format or opting for the more univeral SD/SDHC cards.

Both new models will carry over the familiar cam control dial for making precise manual focus adjustments. The slimmer CX550V will utilize the same front-mounted dial that appears on the Sony HDR-XR550V, which is a welcomed improvement over the side-mounted dial on last year's CX500V. This year, both models will allow you to use the dial to adjust focus, shutter spead, exposure, and iris/gain. Also returning this year are the NightShot and Low Lux recording modes, white balance shift, 10x optical zoom, Face Index, and GPS.

Experience stunning low-light sensitivity with improved image clarity and drastically reduced grain with the newly developed, back-illuminated "Exmor R" CMOS sensor. Designed specifically for compact cameras and camcorders, the "Exmor R" CMOS sensor is designed to let you shoot video in lower lighting conditions with better results.

At the front of the camcorder, you'll find a big-barreled lens with electronic lens cover and a flash on top--there's no built-in video light--as well as manual dial to the side. The manual control dial has long been a staple on Sony's top-end consumer models, but Sony expanded its capabilities a bit. Pressing the dial's center button toggles the operation to the currently selected option; holding the button in lets you select which manual function you'd like it to have.

As for manual functions, the Sony HDR-XR550V has options for focus, exposure, iris, shutter speed, autoexposure shift, and white balance shift. I've always liked the dial for its feel, but if you use the manual focus, shutter speed, and iris controls a lot, it gets annoying bouncing around the options with only the single control. However, this is how all of the prosumer models operate and is a trade-off for their relatively small sizes.

The electronic viewfinder has a higher resolution than its predecessors had, as well as those on several of its competitors, but it is smaller. While EVFs are a disappearing breed and I find them essential no matter how bad, I'm disappointed with how small and low magnification the Sony XR550V is.

Among the other many user-features, the HDR-XR550V offers up the ever popular Face Detection, Smile Shutter, and Sony's Intelligent Auto modes. Other functions like an Assignable Dial and the customizable "My Menu" system help you set the camera to functions you use most often. And let's not forget external microphone and headphone connections, along with the Active Interface Shoe, which allow you to add optional accessories for enhancing your production value.
